Mehendi

Mehendi – an age-old custom deeply embedded in Indian culture, holds special significance in Chhattisgarh. The bride's hands and feet transform into a canvas for intricate henna designs, which symbolise love, luck, and prosperity. However, unlike the rest of India, where the bride is often the sole focus, Chhattisgarh weddings include the groom as an integral part of the Mehendi celebration. Henna artists are invited to the bride’s home or the venue to create elaborate patterns on her hands, arms, and feet. These patterns are often a mix of floral, paisley, and geometric designs. Some brides request specific symbols that are significant to their personal journey or cultural beliefs, like peacocks, lotus flowers, or elephants. A unique aspect of Chhattisgarh's Mehendi is the inclusion of tribal motifs, reflecting the state’s indigenous roots and local artistic traditions. For the groom, a more subtle yet significant application of Mehendi takes place.

Cultural Significance

Traditionally, Mehendi is believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits, protecting the bride and groom as they enter a new phase of life. The ritual is seen as a way to bless the couple with a prosperous and happy married life.

The application of henna is also tied to several cultural beliefs. It’s said that the deeper and darker the colour of the bride’s Mehendi, the stronger her marriage will be. Another belief is that the bride’s Mehendi reflects the bond she will share with her mother-in-law – if the colour lasts long, it signifies a harmonious relationship between the two.

The use of henna also ties into the earth’s elements. As a natural substance derived from the henna plant, the ritual is seen as a connection between the couple and the earth, bringing a sense of groundedness to their marriage. In addition to its cultural significance, the Mehendi ceremony is a moment of respite for the bride amidst the chaos of Chhattisgarh's wedding preparations. It’s a time for her to sit back and relax as her loved ones surround her.

Fashioning Tradition

For Chhattisgarh brides, Mehendi attire typically consists of lightweight, colourful outfits that allow freedom of movement – after all, it’s an event filled with music, dance, and fun! Brides often choose bright shades like yellow, green, or pink. In terms of clothing, a popular choice for brides is the lehenga-choli or a light saree that blends comfort with elegance.

Another popular item is the Ghagra, a long skirt paired with a fitted blouse that offers a mix of traditional aesthetics and modern comfort. Depending on the season, brides are often seen in outfits made from rich silks, brocades, or even light cotton.

The groom’s Mehendi attire is often simple yet stylish. Traditionally, grooms in Chhattisgarh wear kurta-pajamas or dhoti-kurtas, which are comfortable and aligned with the region's cultural roots. These outfits are usually in soft, neutral tones, such as beige, white, or light pastels. However, modern grooms sometimes opt for vibrant colours that match the bride's outfit, creating a coordinated look for the ceremony.

Jewellery & Accessories

For the bride, it’s all about vibrant, traditional jewellery. She often wears a Maangtikka that sits elegantly on her forehead, paired with a heavy necklace that showcases intricate designs – often featuring local motifs. Sometimes, a Nath (nose ring) adds that extra sparkle. The groom often wears a subtle necklace, usually of pearls or stones, adding a traditional yet understated charm. Some grooms also wear armbands called Bajuband.
