Traditional Clothing Of Uttar Pradesh

Women

Traditionally, women native to Uttar Pradesh wear salwar kameez and sarees.  Uttar Pradesh is famous for its Banarasi sarees. They are hand-loomed and preferred for their gold brocade, quality silk, and rich embroidery.

Salwar kameez is a coordinated set of traditional Indian wear consisting of the salwar, a pleated trouser, and kameez also called a kurta - a long top or tunic worn on top of the salwar. This set is accompanied by a dupatta to cover the head or shoulders. In Uttar Pradesh, this simple tradition is made unique by chikankari embroidery and zari work.

Men

The state’s male population is seen donning dhotis, kurta-pyjamas, sherwanis, and pagris and topis (caps) on their head.

Dhotis are typically white, approximately measuring 4.5 cms as a rectangular and unstitched piece of cloth. It represents the Western ‘sarong,’ simply resembling a pair of loose trousers that can be tied around the waist, and the legs are knotted either in the front or back of the garment. Sherwanis are a long coat worn over a kurta on top of a churidar or dhoti. While it is reserved for special occasions like weddings and ceremonies, it adds a certain charm to any man’s outfit, instantly making him stand out from the masses.

Staple Jewellery & Accessories

Weddings demand Uttar Pradesh’s traditional Paasa (maang tika), which is a hair accessory made of gold. The quintessential maang tika stuns every onlooker with its amazing levels of intricacy. From a simple dangling detail to a chandelier-styled layered piece, the maang tika is a bridal accessory and rests beautifully on the sixth chakra, representing the third eye or power of the soul in Hindu mythology.

A lot of brides tend to wear it hanging on the centre of the forehead, which in turn signifies a person’s ability to control emotions and the power of concentration.

Anklets are another such accessory seen adorned by both men and women, with gender-suited details. Men also wear a pagri which is headgear for men crafted from an unstitched rectangular cloth, often varying in shape, size, and colour. Pagris with ornate embellishments are reserved for weddings and festivals.

Fashion Evolution

Techniques like chikankari and zari work have become dynamic, with changes being made to the latest trends and colours in demand by women.

The people of Uttar Pradesh have not confined themselves to essential traditional wear but have combined it with the Western clothing style.

This is mainly referred to as indo-western wear, which has become a phenomenal development in India. It is modern and perfect for all kinds of occasions so that one can never be too underdressed or overdressed.

The fashion evolution of Uttar Pradesh, including the neighboring states of Bihar and Uttarakhand, has been influenced by a rich blend of traditional textiles, vibrant colors, intricate embroidery, and modern silhouettes.
