Panda Kaal Muhurtam
The Panda Kaal Muhurtam is a pre-wedding custom in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry that usually occurs three days before the wedding. It is an important ritual that kicks off the rest of the wedding festivities. The term "Panda Kaal Muhurtam" refers to an auspicious time for the bamboo pole. The bridal party brings home a bamboo pole that is washed with a mixture of milk and water. In some households, the pole is also purified with turmeric paste, sandalwood paste and vermillion. This cleansing process is performed with respect, often accompanied by songs sung by married women, usually in a group of nine. After being prepared, the bamboo pole is positioned in one corner outside the house. It is adorned with items such as mango leaves, banana plant stems and leaves, vibrant flowers and sometimes a dash of rose water. Decorating the pole becomes an occasion where family members join in enthusiastically singing and dancing together. The ceremony ends with an aarti using either camphor or incense sticks, followed by the act of breaking a coconut, which is considered very auspicious. After that, the elders in the family offer their blessings to the newlyweds and wish them prosperous lives. This ritual serves as a prelude to the wedding and a joyful gathering that unites the family in anticipation of the upcoming celebration.

Turmeric holds a lot of significance in Tamil Nadu weddings as it is a symbol of purity and prosperity and plays a role in purifying the bamboo pole. The presence of married women is also believed to bring luck and enhance the ritual’s positive energy.

The intricate patterns often feature motifs like temples, peacocks and flowers, which are considered lucky and elevate the elegance of the bride's outfit.
As for the groom's attire, he typically wears a veshti (dhoti) paired with an angavastram (shawl cloth).
The veshti is commonly white or cream with a border to signify purity and prosperity. The simplicity of the veshti is complemented by the angavastram draped over his shoulder, lending a graceful touch to his ensemble. The groom may also opt for a silk shirt or kurta to complete the look. The veshti has been a part of South Indian men's fashion for generations, embodying simplicity and cultural tradition.
Jewellery & Accessories
In Tamil culture, the jewellery worn by brides during the Panda Kaal Muhurtam ceremony holds immense significance. Adorned with depictions of deities and other auspicious symbols, this jewellery goes beyond adornment to reflect rooted traditions in Tamil heritage.
The bride usually adorns a maang tikka, a forehead ornament symbolising the eye and wisdom. Jhumkas, with an Indian touch, are also essential. These earrings are typically large and intricate, often showcasing designs inspired by temple art. Brides also layer necklaces, often featuring designs of temple jewellery. Among these, the Kasumala stands out—a necklace meticulously crafted from coins symbolising affluence and prosperity.
Another customary piece is the Palakka Mothiram, a gold necklace adorned with stones and mango-inspired motifs symbolising fertility and abundance. The Ottiyanam is a belt worn by the bride to secure her saree in place, adding both practicality and an element of elegance to her ensemble. This belt is usually intricately designed to highlight artisanship.
