Reception

Reception

After all the rituals and ceremonies, the bride and groom can finally celebrate getting married with a Reception! In a more formal version, the Reception is an official introduction of the bride to the groom’s relatives and friends. A more contemporary take on the event is a lavish party with food, music, and dancing. Traditionally, the Reception is hosted at the groom’s residence. In modern times, however, the venue ranges from hotel ballrooms to banquet halls, community centres, or even the wedding venue. For more intimate gatherings, couples may also host a party at a restaurant or garden. Most receptions will have a beautiful stage decorated with florals, silks, ornate seating, and an aesthetic backdrop. The reception guests come one by one to congratulate the couple and offer gifts of money, flowers, artefacts, etc, though most couples only ask for blessings. The groom’s family might also hire a host, DJ, or live band to keep the guests entertained. The newlyweds might also perform a choreographed dance, similar to the Western tradition of a first dance before the dance floor is opened for everyone else to join in. The Reception is accompanied by dinner that is a mix of traditional Kannada cuisine and more contemporary dishes. Popular dishes include Bisi Bele Bath, Ragi Mudde, and sweets like Mysore Pak and Dharwad Pedha. The buffet might also feature regional favourites such as rasam, sambar idli, benne dose, and maddur vade, complemented by refreshing beverages like neer more and tender coconut water. Depending on the religious beliefs of the couple’s families, they might serve alcohol as well.

Fashioning Tradition

Since the wedding reception in Karnataka weddings is a more contemporary addition to the wedding festivities, it isn’t necessarily very traditional. This opens up the bride and groom to choose from a range of contemporary ethnic ensembles suited to their taste and style. From off-shoulder lehengas to sparkling cocktail dresses, from suave sherwanis to dashing tuxedos—the reception fashion is classy and suave!

For the traditional bride, the quintessential choice is a gorgeous saree. It is a timeless look that exudes elegance, especially for a married woman. However, even with a saree, the bride can still experiment to create looks different from her wedding ensemble. She can choose a lovely Kanjeevaram saree and drape it in a modern way with an infinity drape or an open pallu, adding her own twist to it. She can also move away from silks and opt for a gorgeous organza or net saree. As for colours, the options are endless — bridal reds, vibrant pinks, regal purples, or the classic combination of white and gold — the bride gets what the bride wants.

Departing from tradition, many Kannada brides wear a stunning lehenga for their reception. Lehengas are a popular choice in North Indian weddings and have made their way to South Indian weddings as well. The cut and fit of the lehenga can vary, from traditional ball gown skirts to contemporary silhouettes such as a mermaid lehenga or tiered lehenga. She can experiment with her blouse as well. A full-sleeved or half-sleeved blouse with a round or boat neckline is a sophisticated choice. For something more experimentative, she can go with a peplum silhouette, sweetheart bodice, or corset blouse. To give it the bridal treatment, these lehenga sets can feature intricate embroidery, shimmering sequins, or meticulous beadwork. Completed with a fashionably draped dupatta, the lehenga is ethnic glamour at its best.

For a smaller reception, the bride may also opt for something simpler. Her alternative ethnic options are heavily embroidered Anarkalis, a fusion lehenga-saree, or a gorgeous contemporary gown. Anarkalis, with their flowing silhouettes and regal aesthetics, will make any bride look absolutely radiant. The fusion look of a lehenga-saree combines the best of both worlds, while gowns are effortlessly charming, giving the bride her picture-perfect princess moment.

Jewellery & Accessories

Traditional jewellery holds a special place in Karnataka wedding receptions. As with other wedding ceremonies, brides wear jewellery that reflects their community and heritage. A Kannadiga bride often wears the Netri Chutti or Maang Tika, a beautiful forehead ornament studded with precious stones. She may also wear Muthina Vale Jhimki earrings adorned with ruby, pearls, or diamonds and an Entele Sara, a layered chain made of gold beads.

Other traditional ornaments include the Haaram, a long and slender gold necklace that can be layered with a choker or statement necklace.
