A Man in a tuxedo is worth a million dollars! And who would not like to look like a million dollars on an occasion as special as a wedding, be it yours or of your loved ones. Though the classic attire for men originated back in the 19th century, specifically in the wealthy British and American aristocratic circles, the garment even in today’s modern world remains at the pinnacle of sartorial style, exuding a sense of refined look and class that transcends trends and fads. The classic tuxedos have always remained a hot favourite amongst the Indians right from the 60’s era where we’ve witnessed our veteran actors and stars of bollywood adorning this classic western attire. One look at the man in a tuxedo and the women would just go ga-ga over the style. Such was the craze for this classic attire even back then. And the craze is only increasing in the Indian fashion scene. The unique feature about a tuxedo is the striking contrast between the Jacket lapels and the body of the jacket. A classic tuxedo features either satin or grosgrain lapels, which offer a luxurious sheen against the matte finish of other fabrics. This juxtaposition of different textures enhances the visual appeal and elevates the look of a tuxedo to a higher level of sophistication. Another distinct feature of a classical tuxedo is the presence of satin or grosgrain accents along the jacket's pockets, buttons, and Trousers. These subtle touches of shine contribute to the overall elegance of the ensemble, enhancing its formal aesthetic. When it comes to the silhouette, tuxedos come with a tailored fit, a structured shoulder and a defined waistline that accentuates the body structure of the man adorning this classic outfit created for a gentleman look. And what could be a better occasion than a wedding to look like a gentleman in an attire of elegance and sophistication. What is a tuxedo?
A tuxedo is a formal men’s attire which is worn on formal occasions like weddings, evening parties, gatherings and black-tie events. The classic men’s attire includes a jacket, a pair of trousers, a bow tie and a waistcoat (cummerband).
Why is it called a tuxedo?
Approximately around 1888, this classic men's attire took its name from the Tuxedo Park, a high society enclave in New York, where the affluent residents started the trend of adorning a shorter and comfortable version of the traditional tailcoat to their formal occasions. This style was soon a hit amongst the social elite class and the attire came to be known as the “tuxedo.”
What is the difference between suit and tuxedo?
Though suits and tuxedos, both are men’s formal attire meant to be worn on formal occasions, the distinct differences in terms of style, fabrics and level of formality creates distinction in the attire. Some major differences include:
The style of jackets: Inclusion of a notch lapel made out of the same fabric as the trousers is a typical feature in a suit. Whereas a tuxedo jacket is usually created using satin or grosgrain lapels- shawl, peak or notch. And you will generally witness the inclusion of satin and grosgrain accents along the lapels, pockets and buttons.
Trousers: In a suit, the fabrics and colours match the jackets, and there are no stripes or accents seen running down the legs. Whereas, you can see a satin or grosgrain stripe running down the side of each leg, that matches the lapel accents of the jackets.
Shirt: There is versatility in the fabric and patterns of a suit shirt. The suit shirt can be plain or have subtle patterns. The collar and buttons are standardised. On the other hand, the tux for men is typically available in white colour, and may have pleats or a bib front. The collar is usually wingtipped or turn down for accommodating a bow tie.
Tie: The tie in a suit can vary in colours, patterns and material ranging from silk to wool or knit. Whereas in a classic tuxedo, the bow tie is usually made of silk or satin. Though in today’s modern fashion world, variation in colours and type of fabrics used is acceptable.
Accessories: Adding accessories like cufflinks, pocket squares and tie bars are optional and vary in styling. Tuxedos, on the other hand, are usually worn with cufflinks and studs that match the metal accents of the jackets. A cummerband or a waistcoat is added to create a more formal look.
Can I wear a tuxedo without a bow tie?
Yes, it is absolutely ok to adorn a tuxedo without a bow tie if you are going for a semi-formal or an informal look.
What are the do’s and don’ts when wearing a tuxedo?
When it comes to wearing a tuxedo, there are certain laid etiquettes that are generally followed. A tuxedo is for evening affairs, so people generally adorn the outfit after 5 p.m. The jacket is kept buttoned unless one is seated. If you are adorning a hat with your tuxedo, always ensure to remove it when indoors.
