Nehru Jacket

Nehru Jacket

Customised with a mandarin collar and hip-long length, the tailored coat featuring a front stylised like the Indian achkan or sherwani is known as the Nehru jacket. It gained global popularity by Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister of India, from 1947 to 1964. It is also known as Sadra, Waskat, or Bandi.

Evolution Of The Nehru Jacket

Nehru jacket became one of the fads when George Harrison and the Beatles visited India to learn meditation and music in 1966. They put the spotlight on Ravi Shankar's music and style elements like the white chikankari kurtas and stand collar Nehru jackets.

The stand collar picked popularity from here and became a part of various experimentations with men's suit tailoring. With the opening of the classic movie The Guru in 1969, the suit was spun with a lapel-free stand collar taking inspiration from the velvet suits shown in the film.

From the lifetime of Nehru to beyond, the Nehru Jacket has evolved from its elegant Achkan and Sherwani.

Symbolism & Significance

The Nehru jacket became popular in Europe and America during the 1960s. It was revered with the growing awareness of minimalism in international cultures and the Mod lifestyle of the Beatles.

The jacket became public admiration in Britain during India's political struggle in the early decades of the 20th century, and U.S. leaders courted Nehru as a strong ally against the spread of communism.

He visited Presidents Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy in 1949, 1956 and 1961. Jacqueline Kennedy visited Nehru in 1962, and the Prime Minister's jacket was revered along with the first lady's dress.

Design Elements

The silhouette of the Nehru jacket is a variation of the Jodhpuri, a stylised version of the Angrakha.

The Nehru jackets were initially made from handwoven khadi.
