Kolhapuri Chappals

The ancient city of Kolhapur, situated on the banks of river Panchganga in Maharashtra, embodies a rich cultural heritage. With magnificent tourist attractions and a glorifying legacy of food, ornaments, jewellery, saares like Paithani and much more, the district is known the world over for its exquisite Kolhapuri Chappals.

Tracing Its Origin

This world-famous handcrafted footwear was first made in Kolhapur, dating back to the 13th Century. As per the history of Kolhapuri Chappals, it was first designed by the elite Saudagar family. Initially made in small villages, the royal family noted the uniqueness of the sandals and crafted a more suitable version for everyday wear.

The origin of Kolhapuri chappals then travelled to Mumbai (then known as Bombay), when they caught the eye of a prominent shoe retailer J.J and Sons,. With an order of 20 Kolhapuri Chappals, and a demand for more, the cobbler community of Kolhapur have not stopped the production of these chappals since.

How They’re Made

So how are Kolhapuri Chappals made? Kohlapuris get their long-lasting finesse from leather layers stitched together by hand. Authentically made of thick Buffalo-hide, the chappal is lighter and thinner.

The hide is grazed, processed and preserved with different chemical and mechanical techniques. Typically, an artisan’s family would make 30-35 chappals per week.

Design Elements

Prevalently, there are various types of Kolhapuri Chappals that could be found in typical colours and styles. Made from natural vegetable dyes, the chappals launched in the market in shades of tan brown and attained a regal look. The chappal is open-toed with a T-strap and flaps on either side, securing the feet. The unique designs and undeniable comfort makes the Kolhapuri type Chappals suitable for festivals, celebrations and weddings.
