“We love to eat and most of my family members are epic cooks. My grandmother (Ammi) was from Surat and we learnt some fabulous Surti dishes from her. We were also very lucky to have travelled to some of the most beautiful countries in the world as a family,” says the designer. Tanzila was always passionate about art & travel, and she has visited several museums & art galleries all over the world. She describes herself as the typical 90s kid - one who wore chunky platform shoes, dark lipstick, black nail polish and listened to Nirvana and the Spice Girls!

The beginning…
Tanzila had a successful career in the finance industry for several years but upon having a daughter in 2008, she claims to have realized that long hours at work meant less quality time with her little one. So, when her daughter turned 2, she decided to hand over her practice to her partners and take a step back. This is when she decided to launch her own label, in 2010, keeping in mind the flexibility of hours and also do something she really loved.

Statement jewellery is what the label is the most well known for. One can expect to find stunning and classic pieces too. The designer wanted to promote local crafts and use other natural stones that were available in countries like India, Sri Lanka, thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan and even Turkey to make fine jewellery & quality pieces within a responsible price range. Tanzila strongly believes in the fact that when businesses source locally, it helps local communities become more economically independent and socially responsible. Using coloured natural tones and some lab created stones were a game changer for the label! Tanzila Rab also makes custom pieces and curates collections depending on clients’ needs & demands.

“In the U.S.A., my most favorite/breakthrough collection was the capsule collection I did for Fashion 4 Development. All the resources used were locally & responsibly sourced. We employed craftswomen from local communities in Jaipur to work on this collection. In India, it was my debut collection for Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop that I love the most. It comprised statement pieces that are still best sellers!” says Tanzila.
